The Rev. Austin Rios is now The Rt. Rev. Austin Rios. Austin, who served as rector at St. Paul’s Within the Walls in Rome for 10 years, was consecrated as Bishop on May 4 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. He will serve as coadjutor with the current Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Marc Andrus, until Andrus retires in July when Rt. Rev. Rios will become the ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California.

“Austin is uniquely qualified to do what he’s been called to do,” noted Bishop Mark Edington, who was one of the co-consecrators. “It was a fabulous, interestingly multi-cultural event.”

The Rt. Rev. Rios, who is the first Latino bishop in the Diocese of California, served in a very culturally diverse setting in Rome. While the multicultural aspects of the California diocese are different, Bishop Mark noted that Austin is well prepared to take on the new challenges.

Maleah Rios, wife of Austin, served the convocation for three years as its Coordinator of Communications. TEC wishes Austin and Maleah God’s richest blessings on their new journey.
