Nineteen young people and 10 leaders from three Convocation congregations met last weekend (29 May-1 June) in Strasbourg, France, to experience God’s word and get to know one another while exploring the topics of racial and social justice.
Participants were given quotes by Martin Luther King and Mother Theresa and encouraged to make a collage around their quote. “This provided to be an incredible process as their artistic freedom really captured their thoughts and insights into the world we currently live in,” said Jane Scheiring, a member of the Beloved Community and Racial Justice book club who joined members of the Youth Commission in encouraging youth to think and read about these difficult themes.
“It was a very successful weekend. I think we all learned a great deal about God’s love for each one of us while having fun exploring Strasbourg,” said Deb Cole, member of the Children and Youth Commission. The group toured Strasbourg by mini train and by river, participated in a scavenger hunt, watched movies, and worshiped with the Temple Neuf congregation on Sunday. They were also part of compline at the LGBTQIA+ church of St. Guillame.
“This annual event is a wonderful offering of the Convocation for the younger disciples among us. My continued hope is that this encounter serves as but one formational experience among many in the lives of our children and youth. We can only be a complement to the nurturing in the faith that fundamentally happens in families and then in our congregations,” said The Rev. Scott A. Moore, Coordinator for Ministries with Children and Youth.
