The second Convocation-wide Lay Preacher Training course will begin in January 2026 for people interested in the possibility of preaching in the Episcopal Church. The one-year course is offered through the Episcopal Preaching Foundation and combines regular self-study with fortnightly Zoom meetings with the trainers, the Rev. Michael Rusk (Geneva) and the Rev. Scott Moore (Erfurt/Nürnberg).
“Our aim is to prepare effective, confident, and passionate licensed lay preachers for the Episcopal Church,” Rusk said. The role of licensed lay preacher is a time-honored tradition in the Episcopal Church. “It is empowering for the preacher and also for the congregation. This is a great way to deepen your faith and share it with others,” he added.
Curriculum materials are in both video and PDF format and can be accessed through a dedicated Google classroom platform. There is also an annual Preaching Retreat, which allows participants to practice and hone their skills.
Upon successful competition of the course, participants receive a certificate from the Episcopal Preaching Foundation and have the possibility to be licensed by the bishop upon the recommendation of their local rector/priest-in-charge.
