In the gentle embrace of Tuscany’s rolling hills, just a stone’s throw from the mobbed center of Florence, our group gathered in May for a transformative spirituality retreat at the Eremo di Lecceto in Lastra a Signa. Maintained by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Florence and currently run as a serene casa di spiritualità by the Padri Sacramentini (Congregation of the Most Blessed Sacrament), the hermitage offered an idyllic setting for both reflection and fellowship.

Fifteen retreatants from across the European convocation participated, including three members of the Commission on the Ministry of the Baptized (COMB) and its chair, the Rev. Ali Gray. Our shared journey was guided by the featured speaker and facilitator, David Osborne. A retired Anglican priest from the Bath and Wells Diocese and a member of the Iona Community since 1996, Osborne brought a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the retreat. His master’s degree in the theology of education, coupled with his passion for environmental sustainability, infused the sessions with thoughtful insights into our spiritual connection with the natural world.

The weekend was replete with moments of joy and profound connection. New friendships blossomed amidst shared laughter and conversation, while existing bonds were deepened through quiet contemplation and communal activities. Birdwatchers and tortoise lovers alike enjoyed the courtyard garden. A particularly cherished highlight was the opportunity to take meals in the rectory, breaking bread with the priests and experiencing their authentic hospitality as we drank their local wine and appreciated the olive oil pressed from their own groves. Our simple sung grace before each meal astonished the other resident groups with its musicality and sincerity.

Nature kindly cooperated to enhance the spiritual experience. While the spring weather offered both showers and sunshine, participants had ample time to take long, restorative walks along the paths and lanes of the surrounding area. Wild forests, old farmhouses, and ancient olive groves provided a breathtaking backdrop for reflection and discovery. Many of the sessions were held outdoors in the shade of towering cypress trees. This immersion in nature created a deeper connection with the themes of creation and sustainability that Osborne so eloquently discussed.

Monica Sharp, Secretary of the Commission on the Ministry of the Baptized, summarized the retreat: “The Eremo di Lecceto once more provided an ideal sanctuary for our retreat. The beauty of the Tuscan landscape, combined with the warmth of Christian fellowship, fed our souls in ways that will endure long after our return home. The weekend was a testament to how deeply interwoven our spiritual well-being is with the peace of nature and the strength of community.”

Coming from a busy city like Rome, it was a welcome relief to spend time in a quiet and peaceful place with such inspiring grounds. I was able to take long forest walks by myself to reflect on our meditations, how God speaks to us, and the beauty of creation and nature. This retreat gave me the chance to reconnect with the deeper parts of myself and the world around me.

When the retreat concluded, participants departed with renewed spirits, invigorated by both the shared experience and the solitude of the Tuscan hermitage. The Eremo di Lecceto, with its rich history and serene atmosphere, proved to be an ideal location for this gathering, fostering both personal and communal growth.

Training for Lay Preacher Certification

EICS is excited to announce a year-long formation program for certification as a Lay Preacher.
The Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe will begin training approximately six to eight prospective lay preachers in September 2024. Candidates should be committed parish members keen to share their faith and deepen their own formation, who are also active and respected members of their local communities. Interested individuals should contact their local clergy, who will propose suitable candidates to the Convocation. The cost is €250 per person.
COURSE OUTLINE
The one-year course combines regular self-study and personal meetings with our trainers, The Rev. Michael Rusk and the Rev. Scott Moore. Curriculum materials in video and PDF document form are accessed online through a dedicated Google Classroom platform. Trainees will be expected to devote an average of 90 minutes per week to self-study and an additional half-day per month attending a group meeting via Zoom.
BACKGROUND
The Lay Preacher Training Initiative is a local formation experience designed to prepare effective, confident, and passionate licensed lay preachers for our churches. A grant from Trinity Church Wall Street enabled the development and rigorous pilot testing of the program in six dioceses. The result was as many as two local trainers and six lay preachers in each diocese, all of whom completed studies of scripture and theology, exegesis, and practical homiletics. The cornerstoneß of the program requires each candidate to receive feedback by preaching to both their peers within the cohort and regularly in their local congregations.
The first 30 lay preachers to complete the Lay Preacher pilot program celebrated their new ministry at Washington National Cathedral in November 2023; one of these, Dr. Freida Herron was invited to preach the closing sermon at the 2024 annual conference of the Episcopal Parish Network.
DIOCESAN TESTIMONIAL
“For many years, we have been making noise about the ministry of all God’s people, but with little concrete progress. The Lay Preaching Initiative provided us the means to act. The cohort of lay preachers is developing an authentic lay voice of Gospel proclamation in our diocese that is both encouraging and challenging. Their good work has stirred our imagination to explore new possibilities for lay ministry in other areas and I am extremely grateful to the participants, diocesan tutors, the Episcopal Preaching Foundation and Trinity Wall Street.”
The Rt Rev Mark Van Koevering, VIII Bishop of Lexington June 2023
